Poverty Resource Centers

Listed below are number of websites that address issues pertaining to poverty.  Some are generators or repositories of research studies, some are advocates of social policy or best practice development, and some are sources for funding of anti-poverty programs.

Institute for Research on Poverty

IRP, at University of Wisconsin, is a center for interdisciplinary research into the causes and consequences of poverty and social inequality in the United States. As one of three Area Poverty Research Centers sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it has a particular interest in poverty and family welfare in the Midwest, its research repository is national in scope.

Brookings Institution

The Brookings Institution is a private nonprofit organization devoted to independent research and innovative policy solutions. Research areas include health care financing, labor and wages, and welfare reform

Center for Budget and Policy Priorities

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is a national policy organization working at the federal and state levels on fiscal policy and public programs that affect low- and moderate-income families. The Center conducts research and analysis on proposed budget and tax policies and develops policy options to alleviate poverty, particularly among working families.

Annie E. Casey Foundation

The primary mission of the Foundation is to foster public policies, human service reforms, and community supports that more effectively meet the needs of today's vulnerable children and families. The Foundation is a grant maker, a research generator, and a repository of data pertaining to children; e.g., "Kids Count."

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

HUD is a major funding source for all matters pertaining to housing related issues, including construction, economic development, support services, safety, community development, job training, etc.  HUD conducts research pertaining to housing issues.

The Chronic Poverty Research Center

The Chronic Poverty Research Centre is an international partnership of universities, research institutes and NGOs which exists:

  • to focus attention on chronic poverty
  • to stimulate national and international debate
  • to deepen understanding of the causes of chronic poverty
  • to provide research, analysis and policy guidance that will contribute to its reduction.

CPRC was established in 2000 with initial funding from the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID).

The Urban Institute  (Web Link)

This is a major research and policy analysis "think tank" for social and economic topics.  The Institute engages in research, publishes research, and also mentors research.  The web site provides downloadable copies of many of the research papers produced by the Urban Institute.

Urban Poverty Center and Social Change (Web Link)

The Center is part of the Case Western Reserve University and conducts research and policy analyses regarding poverty and community development.  The site not only provides access to research papers, it also provides data relevant to aspects of poverty.

NCCP National Center for Children in Poverty (Web Link)

This Center is part of Columbia University.  It is a "treasure trove" of information about children and poverty and presents, research studies, policy analyses, best practices, and resources for addressing the issues.
